It does genuinely piss them off. It's not just about having 300 quid. It's about having 300 quid he can spend on anything he likes. Pub, gambling, decent food, days out to the seaside, etc. That's more than some working people have for the whole month.
Think of the kind of loser that actually gets upset over SSM. They're probably on some kind of basic UC and get about 200 quid a fortnight. It might have been years since they had 300 quid to spend on anything they wanted. Or it might be someone who grinds for 40 hours a week in a factory, warehouse or call centre. After they've paid their housing expenses, bills, etc they might be left with less than 300 quid.
