It's always best to power down a phone as the data is more secure. Most people use biometrics or PIN which is piss easy to bruteforce. Password only and even then you should do as much as possible like clearing old conversations and avoiding cloud backups. iPhones are best for security. These documentaries wouldn't be interesting if they showed the ones where they couldn't unlock the phone.
