Fair, I wasn't there. But I find it hard to believe that a well-intentioned relative wouldn't discuss it with him first instead of selectively hitting him with it in front of a group of presumably young girls. Just sounds like his step dad was fucking with him, and I think that's an extremely simple explanation.
