Yeah, the main problem with people with depression is that they aren't able to help themselves and need a support structure to help push them forward. In the past, men used to have close friends who treated them like brothers and had older men who acted as mentors. Nowadays, though, society is highly atomized, and the only thing strangers do for each other is dish out shamings and mockery. I suppose you could go to various churches and youth centers to see if you can still find a few holdouts of those old social structures.
