Massively popular is a stretch. Outside of the handful of shows (mainly Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ) running on television networks targeting kids it was very niche.
There's a reason almost every distributor of anime from that era went bankrupt, including distributors like ADV Films who had the rights to popular era shows like Evangelion and Macross. It's many years of piracy that made it become more popular honestly.
I do agree with you though that media consumption shouldn't be your identity, but I also think there's nothing wrong with people not appreciating people signaling their love of their hobbies when they only appreciate the mass market entries and their adoption of it presents a real risk to the medium via financial incentives to westernize it.
This has happened with every traditionally "nerd" hobby in the last fifteen odd years. Normal people picking up traditionally outcast interests and shitting them up.
