yeah more distance would definitely be good. I'm vaguely acquainted with an older lady who came from such a family (like a big name family with old ties) and she's like a recluse living in a whole other continent now.
my family was a lite version of this but only when I was a lot younger, like around 10y/o. you need to have your own things.
personally I also study Buddhism and am trying for stream entry (the lowest level of being a "real Buddhist" and not just a fan / someone who read a book and donated a tenner to a shrine once) but such a thing may be yet more difficult to get off the ground than, basically, a practical hobby.
