you clearly know your stuff more than me, and don't get me wrong i've seen those TERRIBLE upscales where the AI hallucinates detail...
but, at the end of the day, you're scaling it up with SOME algorithm? whether it's nearest neighbour, bicubic, something fancier (i have played about with ImageMagick's different options, based on research papers and that).
i think my weird hang-up would be that if you scale the image BACK DOWN, it should be pretty identical to the original picture. which yeah if some DNR/AI thing is smoothing out Arnie's face, or giving him extra fingers, that's not going to happen.
