Oh, as if it needs to be said. Fear plays a big part in it as well. Basically everyone is fed the media equivalent of crack and it's usually in the form of outrage or fear, and the fear of those who have historically been told "You are the dominant group, you are in power, you don't need to worry- we'll look after our own" that their grip is increasingly fraying, and the illusion of unity is increasingly slipping are often the most afraid.
