The whites of Europe were, and still are stuck in a serf mentality, asking permission of the government, or royalty, or mindbroken subservience to "class". All the ones with the self determinism were drawn to the land of the free. It's imbedded in our social identities. America is touted as the place where anyone can become anything, and this is because the people who came here believed that, and that what Americans have been raised with. "We are number 1" the optimism is both a boon that hightens them to achieve more, but also can make them arrogant to real rivals, such as Chinese economic investment in other countries that once were close to the US.
Except perhaps the French, they stand for their freedom with protesting, but the problem there is that they are French.
