The man gets a virgin to bond with that hasn't been known in the most intimate ways by other men, for whom she was just another sexual conquest, and the woman gets a loyal husband that will take care of her and the children she provides him. It makes total sense even outside of the context of religion. Unfortunately, marriage is largely a raw deal for men today because not only are they getting women that are on average run through to say the least, but those same women are then able to "divorce rape" them amongst other things.
