It's their relationship to scupper, if there even is one and it's not just a troll. Your point is still valid that people notice and think things over in a relationship. Choice words or sentences that seem off in the moment but are revealing later.

A relationship starting off with lots of deception and mistrust is doomed to crash and fail spectacularly and it'll ruins people's ability to trust or feel safe.
