This isn't the case in Russia or China. There the universities are dominated by people who toe the party line. In the 19th century, most of Western academia was nationalist, racist, and sexist. During the Middle Ages, the most learned people were theologians.
What I am trying to get at here is that the thoughts that the academics of a given society hold are hardly objectively superior views; rather, they are the product of historical, material, and political conditions.
