aye you can just lose a battle on the boat to get back off the boat. more blatant glitches, you can do things like surf THROUGH the blokes that guard the docks.
these games have been dissected to death, warts and all, but i absolutely did some stupid shit as a kid. i never picked up Flash and just guessed my way through the caves. and i definitely did two of the towns/gyms out of order. quite a few things you can easily skip without any trickery.
