This is a more plausible reason, absolutely, but why would the US go to war when they could just buy those things? It would be cheaper overall. I guarantee that the end result of this conflict will not be the US setting up military-cordoned lithium mines. An end result of the conflict and a currently happening thing right now is that the flow of fentanyl-laced drugs from Venezuela will be stemmed considerably.

I know it's sort of conceptually hard to think of a Western government that honestly cares to stop drugs flowing into it and to prevent the needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of its citizens, because Western governments have been so corrupt and evil and antagonistic to their people for so long. But really does there need to be other justifications for the military action? At any other period of history this would be seen as simply the correct option. A country is flooding your with poison? You have a big military hammer compared to their little military stick? What's even the debate to be had at that point?
