Yeah same, I think from what I've seen online the book is supposed to criticize young Russian nihilists of the time and it's pretty much the same thing today

Yeah, but I also found it funny too! I like how honest he's being about his thought process. How he knows perfectly when he's just acting, and stopping in his act would be even more cringe, so he keeps digging that hole. He's literally me

Yeah you're right, it critiques the hubris of utopian rationalism, and this idea of freedom, and all these impulses are all sources of suffering, isolation and internal torment.
