See for the mid-west it got its name as being in the middle between the part of the US known during its time as "The West" and the rest of America. That's largely it, it was just that space in between.

Yup! Also, I appreciate your thinking B^). With the black plants for example, if you get it to work then they have the potential to out compete most plants. Their issue is that CO2 is a bottleneck and RuBisCo plays a part in that too. But there are more sources of carbon than just CO2 and people are already working on fixing Rubisco >B^). The purple mosses would likely just cause a radical shift if they were made to grow well beneath grass and on the trunks of trees. They can make use of green light, the light which other plants can't use and so any spot that's green is a spot they can live in.

Absolutely! We already know the compounds that make lavender smell like it does, you just need to insert the genes into the moss to make them do the same.
Those lithops too, it helps to think about how most flowering plants sprout with two leaves. That's what the Lithops are doing, over and over again. They just have these big, thick leaves. Another cool plant is from the Andes. It's so dry there and these guys grow on the rocks like corals.
