who the fuck says? i used to live in pgh making 1000 a month plus tips and paying 500 rent as my share of a 1000/mo 2bdr apartment. i wasnt saving anything really but i was getting by. things are a lot easier in this regard when you dont need a car to get to work. pittsburgh is literally the cheap walkable city people say doesnt exist.
when i lived there i was making 8 an hour. since then basic retail hourly pay has gone up a lot there. its 12-14 now as i said. and rent there meanwhile is basically the same. this isnt some crappy area either, the part i screenshotted is basically around pitt and cmu the two big colleges, and schenley park is beautiful and great to walk around. (theres also an open-secret gay hookup spot called the fruit loop in that park but that isnt really my kind of thing.)
the only hitch is you might need a parent to cosign an apartment lease if you dont have any credit history, but if you have a signed employment document from a chain store you might not even need that. the rules are kind of different in pittsburgh.
look im not saying getting out of a stuck-in-the-house situation is easy...there are a lot of little hurdles, like how are you going to look at apartments or go to job interviews in another city by yourself? and honestly a lot of the time what your parents really want is for you to either go to college or magically be a different person...so they wont be very helpful. but dont tell me the numbers are the problem, because theyre not.
