You are not entirely incorrect but you are talking about fringe cases. Most women had no access to anything and no ground to stand on in terms of whatever they wanted. Humans used to be not at all protective of their kids, cherishing children is a new age invention caused by the deficit and rarity of said children. For most of history, kids were seen quite literally as sub(half-)humans
