I think it's popularized through media and isvthe easiest most affordable way to hurt yourself, I don't get it either because I get the urge to harm myself but not with tracing a blade on my flesh, it's oddly specific to be a human instinct.
I just have gory and violent fantasies without being able to have an outlet, since there's no going back from hurting myself like that and I don't feel the need to specifically cut.
