Perhaps the better question is: is it a real diagnosis?
That is, is there any proof aphantasia isn't the default state?
I have yet to meet a single person who can prove they can "visualize" things. And besides proof, if you just ask them "ok, so it's like seeing the thing?" and they go "well actually, it's not seeing but..." and then they list a million conditions that actually reveals it's more a feeling than a picture in their minds.
So the presumed baseline appears to be fake; it's a false dichotomy.
