You do though. Pattern recognition is fundamental and evolutionarily hardwired into our brains. It doesn't have to mean that you're stereotyping. It's just a means for navigating uncertain situations. For example, we know that most mountain lions are dangerous, so we treat them with caution. Could one be tame? Possibly, but it's safer to go with the pattern than it is to assume each one is a blank slate. It's just informed judgment. The key isn't to ignore the patterns but to instead remember that they are generalizations that can have exceptions.
