I'll basically repeat what Renato Rebelo said;
He was a prodigy kid with elite wrestling (i think he almost made it to the Olympics) and also was a national champion in boxing when he was 15. Already sponsored by Nike and shiet (iirc).
UFC wanted to sign him but Bellator offered him a a better salary just for him to train, until he started his MMA career.
He is a great but he is over aggressive which makes him stupid
I think everyone saw that in this fight. He was doing very well but was leaving some spacess for Murphy to hit him. I think Murphy hit him twice with kick/knee, then timed a perfect elbow.
So, the reason he was a co-main already is because he is a champion material (when he stick to the gameplan), he is an exciting fighter and mainly, he is American. UFC needs an American champion as soon as possible.
