Pico was probably going through canned offense sequences on autopilot and shuffled across the distance when he shouldn't have. He's not a fighter who's built enough experience to be able go naturally problem solve and adapt on the fly like Murphy is. He just does the moves he drilled without giving thought to positioning or his openess
