Oxford and Cambridge are unis, not colleges (the "colleges" at oxbridge are another thing altogether)
A lot of the new unis were previously polytechnics (uni for plebs back-in-the-day)
Education in this country has a long history of trying to keep the unwashed in their place. They're generally pretty successful at it.
