1. I think he was tired of Gen Z players. He even talked about like the helmet slamming stuff after they lost to Michigan, he didn't like.
2. NIL made recruiting much more of a guessing and salary cap game. Recruiting, as much as we joke about McDonalds bag, is a lot about relationships. Dabo Sweeney offered Deshaun Watson when he was in middle school, for example. NIL ruined that dynamic, you had guys that Saban had known since they were kids suddenly decommitting because Texas/USC/Tennessee/other NILbaby colleges offered them a huge bag.
3. Transfer Portal makes coaching players even harder because you're walking on eggshells. And Saban likes to coach his guys HARD.
4. Coordinator turnover. Saban had dealt with it his entire career but you could tell it was wearing on him. Bama basically quiet fired Pete Golding and brought in boomer Kevin Steele to replace him. I remember Tommy Rees was like their 3rd option for OC, too.
