I still think this is the case tho. In the time between 2005 and say 2010 where more and more crators popped up with their own websites the taboo fetish was pure. You never heard the word step- even in the bigger studio productions.
It was only after that together with sites like OF and MV and such, which took care of all the technical aspects of distribution but also enforced their own ToS that all the content shifted towards vanilla.
Being explicit like fiona isn't rewarded anymore but punished instead. The "novelty" is crap like this entire step- bullshit.
