that's the thing anon, the slann collapsed the gates on purpose, they're reptilian aliens pulling the strings of an experiment of cosmic proportions, dooming the world and all the lab rats they uplifted was part of the plan all along.
closing the gates would have represented a total failure for the experiment, while creating the vortex themselves was merely delaying a total failure. The fact one of the creations made the vortex was a sign the experiment had a sliver of chance of success.
