It's the same thing that happened with the prequels and EU in Star Wars. They got a lot of shit until the ST came out. At which point they looked like masterpieces by comparison and people started circle-jerking over them.
Which is not to make a comment on the quality of any of those things I just brought up, but when there's a new, even more polarizing thing coming out, it makes everything before look better by comparison.
