Basically this, and I also don't like how it sort of frames dice rolling in the game. If you have to roll the dice at all, it is a risky situation and you are giving it your best shot. It makes it this weird shit where "ok, I roll to jump the chasm," "okay, you rolled 89 over 65, so you get right up close to the edge but then get a cramp and stop just short." Like, I don't want to constantly come up with narration of how they didn't actually fail the thing, just almost did but then didn't. It reframes every single instance of dice rolling in a way that I don't like.
I think the only reason a mechanic like it exists in the first place is that people end rolling dice way more often in these games than they need too.
