Why would they want to do something about it when it provides them with endless justification for their own existence?
Shit the only reason we "need" the right to "stop the boats" is because they created the conditions for them in the first place; removing pretty much any legitimate way to claim asylum before coming to the UK, then Brexit removed any incentive or obligation for the French to help on their end which together created a two-tier system where better off refugees just flew here and put in their claim once they arrived no bother while the poorer ones didn't have that option and so the smuggling gangs that had been a minor problem had a huge new market to exploit. Then they cut back on the staff who did the actual asylum eligibility process and we overflowed the detention centre capacities, so they had to start putting claimaints up in hostels and B&Bs because once a claim is lodged it's the law that they can stay until it's been fairly considered. Then they had to be seen to be "doing something about it" so they made it illegal to come to the UK for the purpose of claiming asylum as well, which just meant that the better off refugees now also use the smugglers. Every time they make the problem worse they get rewarded for it by the screeching redtop rag "newspapers" acting like this shit just happened for no reason rather than being the result of a decade of policy failures and 30 years of their own puce-faced bellowing blowing the problem out of all proportion in the minds of voters.
Ah well, eventually the current crop of Faragists and Borisers will grow the fuck up and grasp that *all* politicians are lying sacks of shit with only their own interests in mind, even the ones that pretend to agree about there being too many of them bloody foreign sorts.
