They become a symbol of something greater; meaning, strength, direction etc. When that happens, people stop seeing the work clearly because their sense of personal meaning is tied to the person behind it. If the work starts to feel empty or uninspired, they can’t admit it without feeling like something in them is being threatened.
>This makes it hard for them to be honest. They protect the image they’ve built by doubling down, praising things they don’t actually enjoy, or getting defensive when others speak plainly. What they are really doing is defending a version of reality that helps them feel stable. Letting go of that image feels risky, even if the truth is obvious.
