I think it used to be harder to socially isolate yourself by ideology. If you're someone who spends a lot of time on reddit and formerly twitter, and if that's where you get your idea about where the average person is at and what the issues are, it's easy to really misjudge it and go too far because you're only ever talking to that radicalized corner case. A writer in the 80s would go to the bar at some point and have some kind of contact with normal, but now he goes to a subreddit where everyone who isn't purity spiraling is banned and he just loses sight of the shore. So they end up writing stuff that turns the audience away but they have no idea because everyone on reddit is clapping and their coworkers are clapping.
