I was going down a Michael Ritchie rabbit hole a while back, and this was one of his films that I was curious to check out due to the completely absurd premise. This was Benchley's followup after the smash success of Jaws, too. The funny thing is that he would later recycle the premise with small alterations for his television series, "Peter Benchley's Amazon."
