I think it was considered to be a box office disappointment, because it didn't do Jaws numbers for the studio. I think audiences were expecting more of a "man vs. nature" action-adventure. The movie stretches suspension of disbelief beyond its breaking point.
The interesting thing is that the premise works better as a television series. Rather than being villains, the characters in "Amazon" are decendants of religious pilgrims from 17th century Europe who were blown off-course on their way to the New World. The episodic nature of television allows for greater world-building, and everything becomes less preposterous. It's still pretty silly, though.
