Pilate was afraid of the brewing revolt and knew that his forces stationed there would not be able to handle the angry mob if the push comes to shove. Also, a revolt is an automatic political death sentence to his career so he appeased the Pharisees as much as he can since after all, what's this one insignificant Jew's death if he could keep the peace?
