life isn't a tech-tree in a video game. the "lost technology" quote is about the fabrication/production lines and infrastructure to precisely manufacture every single individual component of the rockets, down to individual bolts/rivets that would be assembled into Saturn Vs no longer exists. Hundreds, if not thousands of companies using dozens of machine each. Entities that could only exist because of how much money was being thrown around for extremely precise manufacturing. All of which was steadily built up over the course of the space race leading to the apollo missions, which started degenerating soon afterwards as priorities shifted to lesser and lesser versions of the space program, like the bullshit that was the space shuttle. a "reusable" vehicle that needed to be completely reassembled every time it was used or it would fucking explode.
