However, a Dominion backed militant faction called the Black Crest seized power from the Gorn government in a coup in 2374, ending peaceful relations with the Federation. The Black Crest launched attacks against Federation and Klingon targets, including Cestus III, during the Dominion War. The enterprise was sent to intervene and to stop the Black Crest faction. Data defeated the Black Crest leader, Warlord Slessshh, in a hand-to-hand combat match, and the Gorn were convinced to break hostilities and join the Federation Alliance against the Dominion.
