I was watching some documentary material on the movie, and apparently all these artists, a shit ton of visual artists, came up with all the creature designs and what-not, and THEN they wrote a story and script based on and around the designs. Based. George Lucas had a similar thing going on with the prequels in some instances but not to that degree obviously.
