For what it's worth their web guy has been complaining here and there about increased traffic from webcrawlers, so you might be accidentally correct about the bot thing. But the main cause of a spike in late april/early may would probably be, you know, the massive content release 1/3 the size of the entire original game that happened on may 1st (preceded by a couple weeks of teasers).
This had nothing to do with the oblivion remastered release. The dev cycle for Grasping Fortune was 4+ years, and they never pick release targets until they think they're just a couple of months out. They picked may 1st because of an in-joke with the senior devs; "may 1st" had for years been Mort's joke answer every time a random came in asking for a date for the next release.
