Dogs DID take away from the exploration of Rise though, it was just more subtle about it.
The problem is the maps are no longer made at a "human scale", their designed around the speed of the mounts. And the level of detail gets spread out across that distance. Its a hard thing to nail down but that vibe of "walking through the forest / desert / whatever hauling yourself along and finding resources to gather" disappears when you're zooming these vast distances at high speeds on a mount, so much more of the world is just nothing filler space. Its why I had my concerns about wilds from the very first teaser (that and I felt the environment and creature designs we saw felt more FF than MH, and that the visual grounding of the series was getting more and more lost).
