He's very aware of a lot of things actually going on, he just plays dumb to cheer up Sans very often and he's also just that nice.
And he doesn't seek admiration from authority figures, he just wants friends, that's why he wanted to be a royal guard so he always sticks to Undyne since he figures that'll make him popular.
