there's a debate on whether or not alphys actually DID any of the determination experiments in a more cosmic sense, because gaster left behind quite a lot of work even after blowing himself out of time and space with all recollection of him seemingly missing, alphys did not or possibly could not have come up with any of the determination machinery on her own and the "true lab," gaster's lab, was already a place that existed and she retrofit it to do the experiments and appropriated machinery that was already there

it's still a mystery on what gaster actually did beyond the testimony that he was "so absorbed in his work" that he fell into it, perhaps literally, whatever happened to gaster he peered beyond the veil a bit too hard and became some kind of extradimensional entity at the same time as fragments of his being were blown across all space and time
