Admittedly I'm too young to have ever paid full retail price for any of the classic titles so I might be a bit biased, but I respect the classic series for their simplicity. They don't evolve much, but they're short and sweet. Like none of them takes over 3 hours to beat, and by that point you've seen everything in the game. You're done. You can beat the entire series in less time than it takes to beat a pokemon game.
It's a series that's just so easy to pick a game and play and finish before you can even get bored of it, instead of having to dedicate yourself for something that might go on for weeks until you realize you're not enjoying it anymore.
That being said and referring to the beginning, paying the full original retail price for these games would be insane, as you're still only getting 2 to 3 hours of mostly the same shit every time. But as a cheap collection, it's good shit, a kickass soundtrack and a new variety of bosses and weapons is just enough incentive to quickly play another one.
