Lumiere is more than "paintress bad", anon. I was genuinely interested in hearing the details of how they're managing to keep the city alive, the societal effects of them being slowly genocided, the mishmash of their old technology with whatever scraps of magic they can get back from the continent, the tales of the previous expeditions, and the mood whiplash of what a colossal fuckup the start of the current expedition was.
They tease you with that setting, they throw in a few crumbs, and it gets almost immediately abandoned in favor of vague cryptic family drama that you have no reference point to even begin to understand until like 20 hours later.
The Dessendre fuckery isn't bad, but to me, it was less interesting than Lumiere. And the pacing of how it gets introduced was bad.
