I was playing on the free trial, got to Jeuno, then went elsewhere and met a character. Then I bought the game, went back to Jeuno, and got a twenty minute cutscene clearly set WAY after the beginning of the game with the character I met an hour ago treating me like an old friend. It was really confusing, like if I was playing ARR and walked into Limsa and a cutscene from Endwalker played.
I like that XI has some non linearity, more than just a single quest chain - do some guild quests which gives you enough notoriety to speak to a town leader and that drip feeds you the next bit of main quest. XIV honestly could use that.
