digimon as characters? it's weaved into the dna of digimon. all the partner digimon are characters of their own right. the games play with the concept to varying degrees too (digimon world 2 has a partner digimon that turns into a generic unit after the tutorial, digimon world 3 gives you a party of partners who turn into mimes, digimon world ds has a questline where you tag along with a pagumon, etc.). and let's not forget the partner agumon in survive, or aegiomon in time stranger
all the dqm: joker games also had a monster character in the incarnus
