Carol and Rudy are both the Knight in ways. When you write parents with a dead child into a story, you bring up that the child was never found, and you bring back a dead person in a later chapter.
Imagine the bunker is a dark world that Dess can't leave, where are the places she would want to go? Maybe the places that she remembers being with the people she cares about AKA the Dreemurs and her family.
