I think complexity is a good thing, or can be anyway, but it's often seen as an end in itself. The problem I have with most SRPGs, at least most JP ones, is they're RPG first, tactics game second. So they load heavily on move lists, spells, stats, all that bloatshit; and are lite on simple core tactics, positioning, map obstacles.
They will of course endlessly get praised for being "deep" and "complex" by superficial idiots.
