It's been the "canon" in Rare's games where they also have Diddy Kong act to be the best videogame character and the plot of the Land games is that Cranky told the Kremlings to get the bananas again because the game was too easy. It's always been 4th wall breaking jokes, which works for Rare's style of comedy, but not for Donkey Kong being part of the Mario series. It's not been "canon" for 30 years, it's been a simple factoid for 30 years they never bothered to spend the effort contradicting until now you have a game where they actively want the timeline to slot in with Mario.
