Yeah, it doesn't really benefit the game in any meaningful way. It's a criticism largely leveled by "idea guys" who think that blindly throwing popular features at existing games without regard for their specific strengths and weaknesses is a good idea. It's like people complaining about NPCs disappearing or dying at the end of their side quests, when it's just a simple method of giving those characters closure - rather than having them continue to idle in the game world doing nothing for dozens or hundreds of hours. Case in point, no one ever brings up Nepheli's quest line in Elden Ring because it sucks for this exact reason. She's one of the few characters to not only survive, but get a good ending, and then she just stands in Stormveil for the rest of the game doing nothing.
